Gilbertson Conservation Education Area
This diverse property consists of 1,000 acres located along the banks of the Turkey River near Elgin, Iowa. The park offers a modern campground with 27 electrical hookups and a bathhouse. Nearly 10 miles of wooded trails are open to hikers, non-motorized bikes, and horseback riders. Several backpacking sites are also available to willing hikers. A paved bike trail connects the modern campground to the Gilbertson Nature Center. Here you can play on a certified outdoor playscape, paddle the 4-acre pond, or head inside to see animals native to Iowa including a live bee colony! You can also check out the domestic petting zoo in the summertime. As a Silos and Smokestacks Natural Heritage Area partner site, you can experience the story of American agriculture through touring the Mavis and Conner Dummermuth Historical building that contains hundreds of farm and home antiques. No matter your interest, Gilbertson's has something to offer for everyone!
